We were alerted to the story by a patient who underwent surgery at Hulhumale' Hospital. This story is shocking.
Athif (not real name) was admitted for surgery (details withheld as these minor details may be easily used for identifying our source) sometime last year. After the surgery had finished, and declared a success, Athif regained consciousness to the agony of excruciating pain at the surgical site. His family members who were with him asked the expatriate nurse on duty whether any medication could be given for the pain. Her blunt answer was "NO". Pressed for a reason, she reported that "very strong pain medication" was given at time of surgery and that more doses cannot be used.
After what Athif described to us as "ages" the nurse arrived at the bedside with a special prescription, described to us as "a bluish thin, foil-like piece of paper with a stamp" {we understand this to be controlled drug prescription} and asked his family member to buy "this injection". The injection was bought and taken to the nurse, who took it and placed inside a locked cupboard. Athifs' family member surprised that the medication was not being prepared to be given to Athif asked the nurse why she was not giving the injection to the patient. The nurse informed that it was a "replacement" for the pain medicine given in theater. The medicine we later found out was Pethidine; a morphine derivative.
Hours after surgery, the pain had apparently become unbearable and Athif was, he told us, begging his family members to do something for him. At that time the nurse at the counter was a Maldivian. The girl received an earful from the family that day. Her response was an accusation, one that we have now proved as the truth. The anesthetist apparently uses the Pethidine to inject himself, while injecting plain water to the patient!!!
Communicating with Athif via email, we were able to identify the Maldivian nurse who made the accusation. When we approached her for information, she initially refused to talk to us. We had to convince her that this was something that needs to be told if we were to improve things at Hulhumale' Hospital. She agreed, on the condition of anonymity.
The nurse told us, in person, that the hospital administration including the in-charge, Mr Mohamed Yousuf Fulhu, was aware of the practices of the new Anesthetist. She told us that she believed that Fulhu had already reported the issue to the Minister and Dr Sheena. Apparently, everyone at the top level at DMS and MoH was aware of this before the staff of Hulhumale' Hospital. The anesthetist was previously working in another island hospital, where similar things had been reported.
The nurse reported that the doctor would "steal" "narcotics" from the "locked cupboard" and use it himself and report it as having been used for a patient. She also tell us other trick were used by the doctor to get the injections. Many times he had asked the nurses in the theater to go out to bring something and in their absence pocket the injection "ampule" and fill a syringe with "water for injection".
It was believed that most surgical patients would have been tricked like this in the past many months. The nurse told us that she was told by the pharmacist at the hospital that the doctor also purchases narcotics from the pharmacy on prescriptions with patients names on them.
We called Mr Mohamed Yousuf Fulhu at his office. His staff who spoke on his behalf claimed that no such thing was happening at Hulhumale' Hospital and that our source was making it all up. We have not got a word from Fulhu despite us leaving messages on his mobile [7771889].
We understand that the doctor has an apparent medical condition of his leg which he claims to be the reason for using narcotics. His colleagues however say that whatever the reason, he is addicted to Morphine and Pethidine.
Our concerns are that medications intended for patients in need are being used by this anesthetist by stealing them, he is forging prescriptions to buy narcotics, he maybe "high" on drugs during critical periods at work at the hospital and that his acts are causing physical suffering to the patients and financial losses as well.
We fail to understand the rationale why such a doctor is being allowed to practice anywhere in the country.

MMW's intention to expose injustice and abuse in the health care sector is laudable. In our country where most of the public sector services including health care are broken and needs fixing, the public at large have also turned cynical. Our politicians do not care and do not value a good reputation and they flirt with disaster.
I'm curious to know if you are seeing positive changes by confronting injustice, so that atleast there is some hope of coming out of this mess.
It is not surprising to hear such a thing happening.
It would have been better if MMW stated the name of the individual who is doing this. A picture would do much justice. In that way we all would know who we are talking about.
Hilmy, we do hope change comes about. However, we have promised ourselves that we will be patient and persist in our work. Changes will come.
MH, the person will be named very soon. We initially posted the name.....but were quickly made aware that the name was not correct. We had erroneously printed the previous anesthetists name. The current anesthetist name is being confirmed. The story and its content are absolutely true.
Ashraf is working on it and we will have details on identity very soon.
has MMW officially reported this to the ministry? that doctor needs to be shown the exit door & even others at the hospital who knew it & kept quiet shud be punished...
Shaari,
The authorities know! We can confirm that they had long known about the issue. The latest info we are got was that the doctor had gone for annual leave....and that his contract has been terminated.
He is not returning! His name is Gopal.
Good riddance!
this is horrible.this guy should be punished.
keep up the gud work!
da important thing isnt just terminatin his contract,..whers da law?..wthut any punsihment he is able to escape this thing?..wat abt all those other docs who r workin in maldives..?..nw i doubt abt the honesty of these foreign docs...n to bring to all of ur notice, hulhumale` hospital needs to b carefully investigated for this..n wat i personally feel is that the administration has not done its job..
Yes, even I support the point given by the person who has posted before about bringing down this Criminal to justice. An example clearly needs to be made for others who may be committing such heinous acts. It is terribly disturbing that Doctors and Medical Practitioners of various kinds whom we trust our lives with commit such misdeeds.
hey
Not all foreign doctors are like that... there are some very good docts out there in the hospital...don't label them just because one of them did something horrible... and how can u be soo sure that our own maldivians are not doing it?(i am not saying that they are doing it.. hehe)
anyway our f***ing government should have thrown the dick head Gopal in jail and thrown away the key instead of paving the road for him to abuse more drugs where ever he has gone, and tought him a lesson...
but than again our f***ing government encourages these kinda things... so there's nothing much v can do till it changes...
That's good work MMW. Keep it up. Your close monitoring could expose more in this area. We do not know what goes on in other hospitals in Maldives.
We need our readers and members of the public to alert us on events and incidences so that we may investigate and report on them.
We have received many emails from a number of people since we started publishing. Only a few of them have made it to the publication stage. We are following a few stories and getting more information before we publish them.
We have also received many apparently false stories in this time.
We are not trained journalists, but we too would like to do a bit of research and investigation before we publish the stories. We will not publish the stories unless we have ourselves been convinced that the story hold water.
We encourage everyone to send in their emails.
Punishing this doctor alone is not enough... What about those officials at the ministry who knew about his self medication?
More importantly, we need to have a system in place that would minimize these incidents.. Healthcare workers need to develop professionalism and live upto the ideals of the profession... And that means always acting in the interest of patient (easier said than done).. It also means doctors and nurses should be in a position to report these sort of incidents and prevent doctors who could harm patients from having patient contact, without fear of retribution..
While these incidents are completely unacceptable and erode the professional trust, it is not in anyone's interest to make generalisations to the whole profession.. Our sense of outrage should not compromise objectivity..
Afterall, such horror stories are not the exclusive preserve of Maldives.. Consider the case of Britian's worst serial killer Harold Shipman, a GP who is believed to have killed at least 215 patients (who was also addicted to pethidine).. However the difference is that while Britian, with all it's resources and healthcare system could not prevent such a heinious crime by a medical professional, they did not sweep the problem under the carpet, while we in Maldives do not even have a system in place, to say the least..
Anynoymous, very nicely said.
The foreign doctors are a pain in the arse. Now they have started bad mouthing the Maldivian doctors too, All of them who are doing that has to be deported.
just a request..mmw, can u pl publish abt Dr. Sameer who was recently terminated from igmh..i guess he needs to be exposed to teh general public..coz he has a very beautifully painted outside..but all his intensions inside was to brainwash our small community. n his deeds has brought him bad luck..at least ..i think he too shud have been thrown in to jail for all that he has done to our patients. hope u'll find out more to this story n publish it.
